Motorcycle Insurance Tips for Young Riders

The unfortunate fact of the matter is that as young rider of a motorcycle there is no getting around the fact that your motorcycle insurance will be more expensive than it is for most people who are older and have a good riding history. This is because, for the most part, older riders end up filing less claims over time, so on average an older rider ends up costing the insurance company less of their money. The reality is that the majority of claims filed for motorcycle accidents are filed by riders who are under the age of twenty five.

Even though it is true that you will inevitably pay higher premiums than a motorcycle rider who is older than you, there are a few things that you can do to help you ensure that you are paying the lowest possible premiums that you can in your age group. The first thing that you should do is, of course, ride as carefully as possible. This would be very good advice even if insurance premiums weren’t a factor involved in riding a motorcycle. But if your traffic record starts to show accidents, or even one too many traffic violations and fines, than your premiums will go up, especially if you are a young rider.

It’s also a good idea to take safety classes and advanced rider training programs as well. In many cases this will qualify you for a discount. It will also give you paperwork demonstrating that just because you are young, you are not inexperienced.

Riding an old motorcycle is also advised. Your motorcycle insurance will be lower if the bike itself is lower in cost. Another option is to ride a bike with a smaller engine. If you ride a bike with an engine between fifty and one hundred twenty five cc, there are several insurance companies who will offer you a lower premium than if you were to ride a bike with more horsepower behind it.

When shopping around for motorcycle insurance, as a young rider it is a good idea to shop around online rather than calling around. This makes it much easier to compare quotes with one another. The competition fostered by the internet is also helping to lower the cost of motorcycle insurance for young riders. There are constantly new start ups forming on the internet, and they are all competing over your membership. Keep this in mind when you shop around.

Finally, you can help prove to your insurance company that you are responsible by keeping your bike in a safe place where it can not be easily stolen. It is also a very good idea to use insurance approved locks. This way you can demonstrate that you are not a liability to the motorcycle insurance company.
